Court rejects treasurer’s effort to block petition

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – New Mexico’s highest court has rejected the Bernalillo County treasurer’s effort to block the recall petition against him.

Manny Ortiz allegedly mishandled the county’s finances, so much so, it left the county nearly $23 million in the hole.

The loss forced every county department to make cuts.

In March, a lower court judge ruled there is enough evidence of wrongdoing for Ortiz’s critics to move forward with a recall attempt.

Resident George Richmond is leading that charge.

He is trying to get the recall measure on the November ballot.

Ortiz took his fight to block the recall all the way to the state supreme court.

Ortiz continues to deny he did anything wrong. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
