Boyfriend faces judge after 4-month-old hospitalized

Boyfriend faces judge in baby's abuse case

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A 4-month-old girl is fighting for her life in the hospital Monday, while her mother’s boyfriend who is accused of hurting her faced a judge.

Albuquerque police say Michael Hyer was supposed to be taking care of the baby and her 2-year-old brother.

According to a criminal complaint, the kid’s mother called police to a house on 72nd Street near Ladera northwest.

She told police when she got there Saturday evening Hyer tried blocking her from seeing her daughter. She found the baby unresponsive and with a mark near her right ear.

The baby was taken to the hospital where she underwent emergency surgery for a brain hemorrhage.

Police say Hyer changed his story several times and at one point said “it sucks” taking care of the kids while their mom was away.

He is being held on a $100,000 cash or surety bond. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
