ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A time for celebration ended with gunshots overnight, and now one man is dead.
Neighbors say it was a graduation party gone wrong, but police aren’t calling this a murder just yet.
Neighbors we spoke with say it sounded like four gunshots rang out, then people started screaming and running before cops arrived.
The incident happened on the 8700 block of Spotted Pony Avenue in southwest Albuquerque around midnight.
Neighbors say the shooting took place at the home of a young couple. They say people were gathered for a party when they heard several gunshots.
Once the shots rang out, neighbors say people scrambled to their cars and sped off.
They say police showed up about 10 minutes later along with paramedics and a helicopter, but APD says a man who had been shot was already dead.
It’s left some neighbors stunned.
“What the heck’s going on?” one neighbor said. “I thought it was pretty safe over here, but people started drinking and making bad decisions.”
Another neighbor said, “the neighborhood’s been pretty quiet so, I mean, I’ve never had any trouble since I’ve been here, but last night was pretty crazy.”
Police say detectives have interviewed several witnesses including one person who was allegedly involved.
No arrests have been made, and at this time police are not calling this a murder or homicide.
Detectives say they’re still trying to figure out what exactly happened and who pulled the trigger.
