Despite job losses, unemployment rate drops

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – New Mexico’s unemployment numbers are dropping even though jobs are being lost.

The state’s unemployment rate dropped to 6.8 percent in April. That’s down from 7 percent in March and 6.9 percent a year ago.

But the state Workforce Solutions Department says the state’s economy lost 4,400 jobs over the past year.

The area with the largest job gain was the financial sector which added 2,200 jobs in a year.

Government employment lost 2,800 jobs over the year, mostly at the local and federal levels.
