SFPD hosts donor drive for ill teen

SANTA (KRQE) – The Santa Fe Police Department is coming to the rescue of a young girl battling a rare blood disease and they need your help.

Miquela Martinez, 16, is from Ojo Caliente.

She was diagnosed with a rare disease that causes her red blood cells to break apart and release hemoglobin which keeps them from carrying oxygen through her body.

The once vibrant teen is now confined to a hospital bed so she can have daily blood infusions.

Doctors say a bone marrow transplant could save her life but they’ve been unable to find a donor.

The Santa Fe Police Department is holding a donor drive at the police station this Monday from 10:00 until 4:00.

Testing is easy all they need is a cheek swab.

If you can’t make it to the donor drive you can register online by clicking here.
