SILVER CITY, N.M. (KRQE) – The Signal Fire burning in the Gila is growing and now more fire crews are attacking the fire.
More than 500 firefighters are battling the blaze burning in a rugged terrain near Silver City.
It’s grown more than a 1,000 since Tuesday. About 5,700 acres have burned and it’s only 15 percent contained.
Fire crews worked Tuesday to secure a fire line on the northern perimeter of the fire. Cooler temperatures helped.
Weather conditions Wednesday also may help contain the fire as temperatures are lower and only expected to reach around 60 degrees. Temperatures will rise over the next few days.
There are five helicopters, 18 engines and one dozer fighting this fire which is believed to be human caused.
According to a news release issued Wednesday, State Highway 15 has been reopened.
