Rescued baby owls cared for at Roswell Zoo

ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – The Roswell Zoo has some new furry friends, four baby owls.

The zoo says a man was cutting down dead trees at his Roswell home when he found the group of 3-week old screech owls inside a hollow of one of the broken limbs.

Zookeepers are now caring for the babies while they make arrangements to send them to a rescue and rehab center in Albuquerque.

For now, workers say they’re enjoying their time with the adorable creatures.

“Occasionally we will get something really different like this sometimes it’s a dove or a grackle, but screech owls are really cute and they make the cutest noise in the whole world, ” said Zoo Director Elaine Mayfield.

None of the baby owls were injured when their home was cut down.

Zookeepers say the mother of the baby owls was nowhere to be found. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
