Photos reveal melted containers at WIPP

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – Investigators are slowly and painstakingly getting a better idea of what’s going on in the deep, dark caverns at the WIPP site.

Over the weekend a camera on an extender reached the back of the storage area where radiation leaked in February.

Photos show melted plastic and rubber on the tops of waste containers and drums. It is unclear what exactly produced heat.

Experts are analyzing all this and plan to get more pictures from another angle.

No one knows at this time when WIPP will be safe to reopen. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
