ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – “I bestow this diploma on you and say congratulations” said APS superintendent Winston Brooks to 20-year old Zack Smith who accepted his honorary diploma Monday.
Battling an aggressive form of brain cancer since he was 16, Zack wanted his high school diploma before he died and today he got it.
Zack is from Clovis, NM but he’s been living in Albuquerque for treatment.
Throughout his fight Zack kept studying in the hopes of either graduating or getting his GED. “I would like to say thank you to everyone who has helped me through this journey,” Zack said Monday.
Zack also crochets scarves and sells them. He uses the money he makes to buy toys for other sick children.
Zack’s mom says they recently got the news from doctors that there is nothing more they can do to help him and he will soon enter hospice care.
