LAS VEGAS, N.M. (KRQE) – More information has been released about a man was shot and killed by New Mexico State Police.
It happened around 6 o’clock Thursday night at the Dave Jones Trailer Park on Castle Drive in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The initial call to police came in about a suicidal man around 4:30 p.m.
“As they as they approached the residence they encountered mister Lujan with a rifle,” Chief Pete Kassetas said. “He had exited and entered the residence numerous times, engaging officers with the rifle.”
The shooting happened at the home of the man Chief Kassetas identified as 48-year-old Arcenio Lujan.
Chief Kassetas said officers at the scene negotiated with Lujan and pled with him for about 30 minutes to put the weapon down and not harm himself or others.
He said Lujan took a seat on the porch while the cops tried to get him to put the weapon down and then he got up.
“He opened up a gate, he advanced on the officers, he raised the rifle and leveled it at the officers, and officers had no other choice but to fire in defense of themselves,” Chief Kassetas said.
Chief Kassetas said Lujan died at the scene.
The chief did not provide any further details about who or how many officers who fired the shots, but said they’re on standard administrative leave and the case is now being handled by the Criminal Investigation Division.
Lujan worked for the city of Las Vegas and there had been some kind of altercation there earlier in the day.
