Sources: Sandia AD accused of sabotaging coach

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It’s not unusual for an athletic director to try and get rid of a coach, but how sources tell KRQE News 13 how Tom Knauber tried to get rid of Sandia High’s successful hoops coach could cost him his own job.

APS confirmed Knauber, the school’s current AD and former head coach, is on paid administrative leave while the district investigates allegations of misconduct. APS only elaborated by saying the investigation does not surround conduct involving students or anything sexual in nature.

But News 13 has learned the story behind the investigation is strange and complicated.

According to sources, Sandia High received an anonymous call claiming a pot pipe was in basketball head coach Alvin Broussard’s desk. Following a conversation, administrators determined there wasn’t enough probable cause to search the office, so Knauber searched it himself and emerged with a pot pipe.

According to sources, Broussard, who’s coached the team for six years, vehemently denied the pot pipe was his. Sources say after reviewing the security tape, it was determined that Knauber entered Broussard’s office the day before the tip came in.

News 13 has learned the investigation into Knauber surrounds whether the athletic director planted that pot pipe in the head coach’s office. What’s unclear is, if the allegations prove true, what motive Knauber would have had.

Reached by phone Thursday afternoon and asked to give his side of the story, Knauber declined comment for this story.

Broussard’s attorney Leon Howard released a statement to News 13 Thursday. It reads in part:

Coach Alvin Broussard looks forward to cooperating fully in any administrative or criminal investigation related to Sandia High School’s Athletic Director, Tom Knauber. We trust that APS will conduct a thorough investigation into this matter.

The allegations against Mr. Knauber are very serious, and it is unfortunate that a rising star such as Coach Broussard has been placed in this position. This incident has placed a great deal of stress on Coach Broussard, his family, program and students.

Coach Broussard has devoted his many talents to improving our community and helping our youth. He has proven his character over many years and will continue to do so throughout this process.

Coach Broussard is not ready to make any statements out of respect for the ongoing investigation. Coach Broussard asks that his privacy is respected during the investigation, and he appreciates the community’s support in this difficult time.
