Official Could be 3 years before WIPP fully operates

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s going to be a long time before WIPP is fully up and running again.

The nuclear waste storage site in deep underground salt beds near Carlsbad has been closed by a radiation leak since February.

At a public meeting in Carlsbad Thursday the head of the recovery effort said that it could be three years before full operations resume.

Investigators have found the area where the radiation release originated but have not pin pointed the source.
