ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Albuquerque police are in desperate need of more officers and help is on the way.

The training academy graduated a class of new recruits Thursday.

Twenty-three officers graduated, however, only 21 are going to APD and 2 are going to Rio Rancho.

This class is smaller than former academy classes which saw about 30 to 50 graduates around 2009-2011.

It’s sorely needed for the department which only has about 900 officers right now. Only 386 of them will be patrolling the streets.

Ceremony leaders Thursday commented on how this is the first class since the DOJ report which slammed the department for its training and hiring.

Eden says officers are getting extra training to finish the academy that includes crisis intervention training.
