Boy to change plea for school shooting charges

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – News 13 has learned the 12-year-old accused of opening fire at Berrendo Middle School is planning to change his plea.

A change of plea hearing for Mason Campbell is scheduled for May 16th.

Campbell is accused of taking a shotgun into a crowded gym at the school in January, then firing off a round of birdshot hitting Nathanial Tavarez and Kendal Sanders.

The two were severely injured.

Campbell is charged with three counts of aggravated battery and another charge for taking a weapon into school.

At a March hearing, Campbell did not enter a plea which is the equivalent of pleading not guilty.

His attorneys said then that they were working on a plea deal.

Campbell remains locked up at a juvenile detention center.
