Joe Harge leaving NM Highlands

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – KRQE Sports has learned that New Mexico Highlands basketball coach, Joe Harge has resigned after six seasons.

The resignation is effective May 14th. Under Harge the Highlands Cowboys had one of the biggest turnarounds in the country, going from a consistent loser to one of the top programs in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Harge says support for his team dwindled after the departure of former Athletic Director Ed Manzanares.

“We set the NCAA record, we won the league, said Harge. “We went to the NCAA tournament, and then after the three years, you know, our funding started to get cut and we ran into some other issues, and it was reflected in our record and just our ability to bring kids in.”

Harge doesn’t know where he will go next but, he is sure he will be coaching basketball. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
