AFD working on preventative health care

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – In keeping with the federal health care overhaul, the Albuquerque Fire Department is putting a new emphasis on preventative health care.

The idea is to reduce the number of hospital visits and admissions for people with chronic conditions.

AFD is becoming more proactive by trying to identify hazards for the elderly and substance abusers.

It is trying to find alternatives to emergency room visits.

The fire chief says one possibility would be to send a firefighter and social worker to the homes of those recently discharged from the hospital to follow up with them. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
