Vigil held for those recently killed by APD

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – At Veterans Memorial Park, community members held a vigil Sunday night in honor of Armand Martin and others killed in recent APD officer-involved shootings.

Saturday’s fatal APD shooting was the second since the U.S. Department of Justice released a blistering report on the department’s use of force three weeks ago, and the third since the controversial shooting of James Boyd in the Albuquerque foothills in March.

Video of two APD officers shooting and killing the mentally ill man sparked outrage and protests.

At Sunday’s vigil, organizers said it was about honoring and respecting life.

“We need to figure out how to value each other’s lives and do everything we can to keep people alive and get people to some kind of peaceful resolution as much as possible,” said vigil organizer Enrique Cardiel.

Participants of the vigil say they are in disbelief at the number of recent deadly APD incidents. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
