2 die in early morning crash near Gallup

GALLUP, N.M. (KRQE) – Early Monday morning, a crash involving a semi and small car killed two people, according to the McKinley Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies say the semi rear-ended the car while traveling eastbound on I-40 around 4:30 a.m.

Two people in the car died on scene and one was transported to the hospital. The driver of the semi was treated for burns and smoke inhalation.

Deputies say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The condition of the person who survived in the car is unknown.

I-40 is now open in both directions.
