Tourist killed in I-40 motorcycle crash

I-40 reopens after fatal motorcycle crash

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Interstate 40 westbound was shut down for hours after a fatal motorcycle crash Saturday.

According to police, officers responded to the wreck just before 2:00 p.m. and closed all lanes to oncoming traffic.

Police say the victim was a member of a French group that had just landed in Albuquerque and picked up their motorcycles to begin their U.S. Tour.

The event took a tragic turn shortly after when a female driver of one of the motorcycles lost control and hit the trailer of a semi.

Her male passenger, who police identified as 53-year-old Erick Hamel, died at the scene. The female sustained minor injuries officials said. Both were wearing helmets.

While officers were investigating they could not locate the semi that was hit.

Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department said there are no pending charges but if anyone has information about the semi involved they are encouraged to call 798-7000. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
