LOS LUNAS, N.M. (KRQE) – Police say a man has been shot by police after a barricade situation overnight in a Los Lunas home.
According to the Los Lunas Police Department, a woman called dispatch a little after 9:00 Friday night saying her husband was upset and tearing their home up. She had already taken her small children to a next door neighbor’s house to call police.
Upon arrival, officers tried to make contact, but police say the man refused to let officers in. The woman had told police their oldest child was still in the residence. At an officer’s request, police say the man let the child out of the house.
Police say as officers were escorting the child, the individual started firing shots, forcing LLPD officers to take cover.
New Mexico State Police and LLPD SWAT were notified of the situation.
Officials say the man continued to fire shots through the house during the night, firing through the back door, the garage, and through the roof.
State Police say the man eventually left the home with a weapon, and that’s when officers opened fire. The number of officers that fired is unclear.
The man’s identity has not been released, and his current condition is unknown. He was taken to UNM Hospital following the incident.
