Tax mistake will cost state hundreds

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A mistake by the state has some small businesses paying money they don’t really owe.

The Tax and Revenue Department recently sent out notices to 1200 businesses saying they owed a $5 penalty for late payment when they didn’t.

A spokesman says the problem was created when someone incorrectly entered a date in the computer.

About 100 businesses have already paid the fee, so they’ll have to fill out more paperwork to get a refund.

The state says the mistake cost the state about $500 in postage fees.

It will cost more if they decide to send out follow up letters telling businesses it was a mistake. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
