Removed ribbons fuel Portales tree feud

PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE) – It looks like the fight between Portales residents and the city, over trees, is growing even bigger.

Last week, a group tied yellow ribbons around the trees at the Portales municipal cemetery hoping to draw attention to just how important the old elm trees are to the community.

But after the ribbons were put up, city officials apparently took them down saying it violated an ordinance that says nothing should be put on trees.

This fight started last month after the city cut down more than 20 trees saying they were dead, when in fact only one was.

A Facebook page has been set up to raise money and support to save the remaining trees.
