ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – Was it a miracle?
A Roswell man says the Lord appeared to him telling him to get out of his home just moments before it went up in flames.
“It had to be the Lord that woke me up and told me to get up, get up and get out,” said Christopher Hicks.
Just shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday, Hicks’s home caught fire.
The family’s kitchen and back deck were scorched.
“I saw flames just roaring in the kitchen,” said Hicks.
Hicks and his 18-year-old daughter were both sleeping inside when the fire broke out.
He says he was woken up by a dark figure telling him to get out.
“When I finally woke up I looked at my bedroom door which was closed and there was a figure standing there,” he said.
At the time, Hicks says he thought it was his daughter or maybe a fire fighter there to save him, but he says the door never opened and according to the fire department no one ever went inside his room.
“The fire chief even told me yesterday he does not even understand or believe how I made it out of there,” said Hicks.
He and his daughter didn’t suffer any injuries.
In fact, neither of them appeared to have even been near a fire.
“I didn’t inhale any smoke. I didn’t catch any of that. I wasn’t coughing at all. I was perfectly fine,” he said.
Hicks says he doesn’t expect anyone to believe him, but he says he knows in his heart someone or something was looking over his family.
“I strongly believe that he saved me yesterday,” he said. “There is no other explanation for me.”
The fire department thinks Hicks left the stove on and that’s what caused the fire.
They’re still investigating.
Hicks says the majority of his belongings were destroyed.
