Family of woman killed by police files federal suit

HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) – The family of a Hobbs woman shot and killed by police has filed a federal lawsuit.

Amy Reyna died in New Mexico in October after a 20-mile, two-state chase.

The lawsuit filed says the Lea County Sheriff’s Office as well as a police department and sheriff’s office in Texas violated Reyna’s rights.

Authorities say the 35-year-old drove into a pasture near Hobbs and stopped before an officer fired at her.

Dashcam video shows Reyna’s car backing away when he fired.

An autopsy shows she was on meth but the investigation revealed she didn’t have a gun.

A lawyer for the officer says he was protecting himself.
