NM teen honored by USA Today, National Guard

LAS CRUCES (KRQE) – USA Today and the National Guard have teamed up to honor high school athletes who inspire their teams on and off the field, and one of those athletes is from New Mexico.

Alyssa Covarrubia is a sophomore at Oñate High in Las Cruces.

From AP classes, to softball and clubs she says she is inspired by her
Brother Keith, who has Down syndrome, the two team up to play basketball for the Special Olympics Project Unify.

Alyssa also joined advocates in action a club at Oñate that campaigns for awareness for the special needs community.

She has also worked hard to make their annual softball game the largest Special Olympics event in New Mexico.

Alyssa’s softball coach says she has been such an inspiration for her team and he wishes there were more Alyssa Covrrubia’s.
