Community support for Portales trees grows

PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE) – Support continues to grow to save trees from being chopped down in Portales.

Community members have created a Facebook page called Portales Trees Are Treasures.

Last month, city employees cut down more than 20 of the oldest elm trees at the Portales municipal cemetery.

A Portales official claims the city thought they were all dead but a tree specialist says all but one was actually alive.

The group’s Facebook page already has about 150 members who are working to collect money to care for the rest of the trees.
