PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE) – The Portals Police Department is back up to par.
According to the Portales News-Tribune, the department is now fully staffed with 24 officers.
The department had been struggling to fill its ranks and had a not so good reputation for a while.
At least eight officers were accused of misconduct, convicted of felony crimes or had left the department under questionable circumstances, and that was in just 18 months.
Chief Pat Gallegos attributes the jump in staffing to salary increases.
The chief said he’s doing strict background checks of his new hires.
