MDC inmates no longer going to Texas

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – Bernalillo County is no longer shipping hundreds of MDC inmates to Texas.

Last October, the county started paying to house more than 700 inmates at other jails around New Mexico and Texas to help relieve overcrowding at MDC.

About 330 of them were sent to a facility near Houston.

But, the population at MDC has fallen in recent months reducing the need to send inmates there.

According to a county analysis fewer people are being booked into MDC but it’s hard to say why.

There are still about 220 inmates housed at jails around New Mexico.
