Suspect in Marshal-involved shooting caught

Rufus Phelps

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A man that has eluded U.S. Marshals for six days was caught Thursday while waiting for his pizza.

According the U.S. Marshals Service, Phelps was shot at by U.S. Marshals last week when they were trying to serve a felony warrant. Phelps allegedly assaulted a U.S. Marshal and was able to escape authorities.

Thursday the U.S. Marshals developed information to Phelps’ location, sitting in a car near Saggios Pizza at Central and Cornell. Deputies then arrested Phelps without further incident.
U.S. Marshals said Phelps is facing several charges including but not limited to aggravated assault and possession of a controlled substance.

During the six day search for Phelps, U.S. Marshals said several tips were provided to them by the community and ultimately led Marshals to Phelps’ arrest.

Investigators said Phelps was able to elude authorities by selling auto parts in southeast Albuquerque and through the assistance of friends.

Officials said no other arrests have been made at this time.
