DA: Bernalillo County on track for record in child abuse

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – Bernalillo County is on track to have a record year for child abuse cases.

At a news conference Thursday, District Attorney Kari Brandenburg talked about the rise in cases saying more people are reporting child abuse.

She also brought up two high profile cases where children didn’t get the help they needed and were killed by their mothers.

Omaree Varela, 9, was murdered back in December and 3-year old Ty Toribio was smothered, and later buried in an Albuquerque park in 2009.

Brandenburg was joined by other agencies, including CYFD to discuss ways to help curb child abuse.

“I think it brings to the forefront that we need to protect our children. We need to find a way to protect our children because those things shouldn’t happen,” Brandenburg said.

Brandenburg urges neighbors and family members to reach out to parents who may be having a hard time parenting.
