As part of its investigation into the Albuquerque Police Department, the U.S. Department of Justice is holding community meetings with Duke City residents to talk about APD and what changes there needs to be made within the department. Expect a packed house at a town hall meeting in Carlsbad at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Department of Energy will discuss how well the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant is prepared to deal with events like the Valentine’s Day radiation leak.

We’ll hear more Wednesday at an APD news conference over Monday’s use of deadly force. Mary Hawkes,19, was shot to death near Zuni and Wyoming by an APD officer with a troubled past who says she pointed a gun at her. This use of deadly force comes on the heels of the DOJ investigation which found a culture of violence within APD.
