Poor management, safety to blame for WIPP leak

First look inside WIPP radiation cleanup

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – Poor management, an eroding safety culture, ineffective maintenance and a lack of oversight are being blamed for a radiation leak at WIPP.

That’s what the Department of Energy’s accident investigators found.

The DOE report was previewed Wednesday night at a public meeting in Carlsbad and will be released to the public Thursday.

The report does not cover how the radiation leak happened crews are going underground trying to figure that out.
