Man claiming to be Mary Hawkes’ fiancé appears in court

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The man who showed up at Mary Hawkes candlelight vigil wanting to die in a confrontation with police before taking off on a chase appeared in court Wednesday.

In the wake of the shooting death of Mary Hawkes, Mario Romero showed up at a memorial spot where she died claiming to be her fiancé.

Police say he threatened people with guns and said he wanted to die by police shooting and then took off in a stolen SUV.

Authorities say Romero refused to stop pointing a handgun out the window during the pursuit.

He was later caught and arrested.

The gun turned out to be an air soft gun.
