Notah Begay joins Redskins fight

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – New Mexico’s most famous Native American athlete is jumping into the Washington Redskins mascot debate.

Professional Golfer Notah Begay took aim at team owner Daniel Snyder calling the Native American charity he’s created a sham.

Begay told USA Today that Snyder’s original Americans Foundation is a PR gimmick to steer attention away from anger over his insistence on keeping the redskin name.

He also told the newspaper that if the team had a name that was offensive to Hispanics, blacks or Jews, people wouldn’t stand for it.

Begay has pulled his support for a charity golf tournament in Arizona sponsored by Snyder’s group. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
