Makeshift memorial left for woman shot by APD

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Chalk and paint drawings were left on a wall at Wyoming and Zuni overnight, the area where 19-year-old Mary Hawkes was shot and killed by an APD officer Monday.

A group of people who were protesting the shooting Monday morning left the drawings during a candlelight vigil with more than a dozen people on Monday night. The group wrote messages that Hawkes will be missed, and slammed APD for the shooting.

Early Monday morning, police say Hawkes stole a vehicle and when they caught up with her around 6 a.m., she took off on foot, then pointed a gun at officers.

APD Chief Gorden Eden said one officer shot Hawkes and she died on the scene.

More information about the incident is expected to be released Tuesday.

Hawkes was the daughter of former Belen police officer and retired Valencia County Judge Danny Hawkes.

As a judge, he started a program to bring the magistrate courtroom to schools so kids can see the consequences of taking drugs and drinking and driving. He was a foster parent to Mary Hawkes, who was arrested at least two times in the last year for shoplifting and underage drinking.
