Ranchers oppose prairie chicken listing

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Ranchers say listing the lesser prairie chicken as a threatened species is a bad idea and they’re making sure lawmakers hear their concerns.

The Hobbs News-Sun reports that a group of ranchers expressed their frustrations to U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce on Monday at a meeting about the controversial topic in Lovington.

Ranchers and oil companies believe the listing will have a negative effect on the ranching, oil and gas and wind farm industries in New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado.

More community meetings have been scheduled in Roswell and Portales.
