Former detective pleads guilty to raping teen

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A former police detective, who once investigated child abuse and sex crimes, pleaded guilty Thursday to raping a 17-year-old.

Michael Garcia was working for the Las Cruces Police Department when he sexually assaulted the high school intern during a ride along in 2011.

Garcia will serve nine years in federal prison for violating the teen’s civil rights.

He’s also accused of molesting a 12-year-old girl but that case is still working it’s way through district court.

The student ride along program was suspended after the case.
