Police search for man in attempted kidnapping

LOS LUNAS, N.M. (KRQE) – Los Lunas police say a man attempted to abduct a child Tuesday night, but the 7-year-old girl was able to get away.

Police say they responded to a residence on Festival Court around 7:45 p.m. after the girl ran from a man she says tried to grab her shirt. That subdivision is located just north of Los Lunas High School.

The suspect is described as African American with a red vehicle. He had exited the vehicle and tried to take the girl. She was able to get away to a friend’s home.

Police searched the neighborhood last night and didn’t find anyone. This morning, detectives canvassed the neighborhood looking for leads. They say this case is tough right now though because they have very limited information.

“We don’t have a make a model or year (of the car) or any information like that, that’s why the detectives are out knocking on doors trying to get as much information as possible to follow up on,” said Chief Naithan Gurule.

Police say the girl was not hurt.

Anyone with information about the incident are asked to call the Los Lunas Police Department at 505-865-9130, or text 274637 with the keyword LLPD at the beginning of the message. Web tips can also be submitted here.

Los Lunas police believe this is the first incident involving this suspect. They say no other similar incidents have been reported recently.
