Police arrest diamond theft suspect

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputies have made an arrest in a museum diamond heist.

John Murphey, 25, is accused of swiping the raw three carat diamond from the New Mexico Natural History Museum last week.

Deputies say he’s the man in these surveillance pictures.

They say Murphey went to pawn and mineral shops around Albuquerque claiming he inherited the stone which is worth about $20,000.

Southwestern Minerals bought it for $400, but quickly canceled the check and called police.

They say Murphy gave the store his New Mexico ID, leading police right to him.

The judge set Murphey’s bond at $5,000 cash or surety.

He’s charged with receiving stolen property.
