Meeting to be held on lesser prairie chicken

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – New Mexico residents have a chance this week to learn more about the impact of the lesser prairie chicken.

It has been named a threatened species, which some believe could halt oil and gas drilling here to force protections of the bird which could be a detriment to farmers and ranchers.

Representative Steve Pearce is hosting a series of town hall meetings and has invited U.S. Fish and Wildlife, the Agriculture Department, and BLM to attend.

There’s a meeting Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Roswell Chamber of Commerce and a meeting Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Portales Chamber of Commerce. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
