NM business owner spills salary to millions

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE)- One native New Mexican is going public with information most try to keep private – her salary – and she’s telling millions.

An Albuquerque small business owner is contributing to Parade Magazine’s What People Earn 2014 and what’s more, she’s excited about it.

Owner of Nantucket Shoals Seafood Market, Nancy Chavez-Berg greets every one of her customers as they walk through her door. In fact, many of them know her by name.

“Maybe it’s my personality. I don’t know. It’s a crazy personality,” laughs Chavez-Berg.

She’s been selling seafood for 30 years and when she found the opportunity to spread the word about her business, she jumped on it. Yet, she didn’t choose to take out an ad in the paper or put her business on a billboard. Instead, she decided to reveal some very personal information to make it into a very popular magazine.

“Everybody’s going to know what Miley Cyrus makes so, why not me?” questions Chavez-Berg.

It all started when Chavez-Berg saw an article in Parade Magazine calling on people to share their salaries. Chavez-Berg followed the instructions, answering a number of in-depth questions along the way.

“How I got started, why I got started, the process,” Chavez-Berg says.

After months of correspondence with Parade, Chavez-Berg got the news she had been selected.

“I was just beside myself. I’ve just been so, on cloud nine,” exclaims Chavez-Berg.

Chavez-Berg says she hopes her participation in the widely-read magazine will send a message.

“If you persevere, that if you work really hard, that you can make it … it doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, if you provide a good service, you get recognition for it,” explains Chavez-Berg.

Plus, she says the extra advertising doesn’t hurt either.

“I’ve been doing this for so long and having recognition is key and it’s free advertising,” says Chavez-Berg.

So, what does Chavez-Berg make? She says $40,000 year. She says she’s done better in the past and worse, but at least she has a job and can provide for herself.

A gallery of those contributors, including Chavez-Berg, is currently up on Parade’s website.
