ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish a fire at Zia Elementary School late Sunday afternoon after smoke was reported coming from the roof of the cafeteria.
Upon arrival, crews found heavy flames and quickly got on the roof and inside the school to attack the fire, according to the Albuquerque Fire Department. They were able to limit the fire damage to a 10-foot by 40-foot area on the roof.
The blaze did not spread to the inside of the school, according to AFD, and there is only minimal water damage in the cafeteria. Even so, the cafeteria will be unable for the immediate future.
Since the school is on spring break, no classes have been cancelled. The kids are scheduled to return April 21.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but is under investigation. Witnesses say they saw kids on the roof earlier Sunday, however, that has not been confirmed with AFD.
