ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The house is beat up and so is the property. Now, there’s another problem – bees have taken over a southeast Albuquerque home.
It’s driving neighbors crazy and the city is finally stepping in.
“Whoever this house belongs to needs to fix this issue,” Guadalupe Meza said. “It’s a danger to everyone around it.”
Listen closely and you can hear the bees inside the home near Louisiana and Southern. Meza lives near the vacant home, and her three grandchildren first told her about the bees not too long ago.
“Sure enough, we saw a hole as you can see where the bees are coming in and out,” Meza said. “It’s gotten worse.”
Thankfully, Guadalupe and her three grandchildren have stayed out of the bees’ way. Her neighbor wasn’t as lucky.
“They stuck me two times in the hand, one time in the arm,” the neighbor said. “I’m on top off the roof and I almost fell down because it’s an army!”
Meza says she’s tried calling the city over and over, but just keeps getting the run-around.
“Sometimes we can bring this to their attention and they’ll step forward,” said Joe Martinez with the Safe City Strike Force. “You have an obligation to make sure it’s clean, it’s safe.”
Martinez says beginning Monday, the property owners, who live nearby, will have 10 days to clean up the bees and a slew of trash, including some dirty needles.
“If they don’t step forward, we have to get a court order to go in there and open up the wall to remove them,” Martinez said.
“I’m just frustrated with the situation already,” Meza said.
Martinez says the property owners have been paying their taxes on the lot. He hopes everything can be resolved swiftly and without too much trouble.
