Hundreds gather at Civic Plaza to support APD

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Hundreds gathered at Civic Plaza Saturday armed with signs.

Their message?

Despite the findings in the Department of Justice report they still support the Albuquerque Police Department.

Some held signs saying they support the new APD policies that are expected to soon be implemented under the guidance of the DOJ.

The DOJ found APD often used deadly force when not needed, violated citizens’ rights and there was a huge lack of accountability for bad cops.

The DOJ is now calling for big changes within APD such as beefing up its hiring and training standards, especially when dealing with the mentally ill and a complete overhaul for its internal affairs unit.
