Bensen Fire continues to burn near Alamogordo

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (KRQE) – Firefighters are trying to get ahead of a large wildfire burning south of Alamogordo.

More than 100 firefighters are fighting the Benson Fire.

It’s burning three miles west of the Sunspot Observatory on Joplin Ridge.

The fire has burned between 30 and 50 acres and there is no containment.

Right now the observatory is not threatened and no evacuations have been ordered, but there is concern about this afternoon’s winds.

Dog Canyon Trail and west side road are closed because of the fire. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
