DOJ: APD lacks public oversight

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The DOJ report hammers away at APD’s weak internal affairs it also hammers away at the lack of any outside oversight of the department.

At this time the Police Oversight Commission is meeting.

There’s a push to allow the POC to have more say in the police abuse cases it investigates and have more of a say in punishment for cops, something mayor berry has adamantly opposed saying that’s the chief’s job and the chief’s job only.

“The DOJ mentioned specifically that the police oversight commission has the data that it needs to be able to make decision, to be able to be more proactive,” City Councilor Dan Lewis said.

The mayor names the independent review officer who decides what cases the POC can even look at.
