Navy vet searches for missing service dog

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – For one soldier, his dog means the world to him.

Not just for the friendship but for how his dog has improved his health and now he says she’s missing.

Alice, an Australian Shepard, has been missing since Friday from a northwest Albuquerque neighborhood.

Her owner, Hugo Melchor is a Navy veteran who says his dog is more than just a companion, but a life saver.

Melchor suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, a condition he developed while serving in the navy. But he says Alice has helped him overcome his anxiety.

Another reason he wants to find his dog is because she suffers from a medical condition.

“She has food allergies, she’s allergic to chicken and she’s real typical on the foods she eats, so it’s really important I need to get her back not only for her health but for my health as well, she gives me reason to get up in the morning and go about my day,” Melchor said.

Alice also helps keep Melchor’s balance.

Now he is hoping someone may see her and bring her home. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
