Shiprock Uranium Mill gets $1B cleanup

SHIPROCK, N.M. (KRQE) – A billion dollars will be used to clean up abandoned uranium mines on the Navajo Nation.

The money is part of a settlement the federal government reached with Anadarko Petroleum Corporation which owns thousands of long-contaminated mines across the country.

One of them is the Uranium Mill in Shiprock on the Navajo Nation, which is blamed for illness and deaths on the reservation.

The Navajo Nation says the one billion will only be enough money to clean up 10 percent of the tribes abandoned mines. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
