LANL completes multi-million dollar security system

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (KRQE) – The multi-million dollar security system at Los Alamos National Lab is finally complete over budget and behind schedule.

The advanced security upgrade for the lab’s highly-sensitive plutonium complex was supposed to be done two years ago at a cost of $213 million but officials discovered major problems and asked for an additional $41 million to fix them.

The entire project came in at $244 million.

It protects the area known as Technical Area 55, the only place in the country where nuclear weapon triggers can be made.
