HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) – The population of Hobbs has been growing fast because of the oil and gas boom. So fast it’s the eighth fastest micropolitan areas in the U.S.
A micopolitan area is defined as an area and adjacent communities that have a high degree of integration but are smaller than a metropolitan area.
According to the U.S. census bureau Hobbs’ population grew by 2.9 percent in one year.
While the growth has been great for jobs in the area it has created a housing shortage.
Most of the cities that grew as fast as or faster than Hobbs, also experienced an energy boom of some type.
They included, Odessa, Midland and Andrews Texas and Williston and Dickinson North Dakota.
